18 Month Old Little Man | Minneapolis Children's Photographer

How do I even begin the intro to this session.
Carter was a perfect 18 month old little boy.
He ran around the studio 75% of the time.
With that said, this session went perfectly.
It took him about two minutes to warm up to me, and then he began his search:
pushing around chairs, climbing on couches,
sitting on window sills, we played with blocks,
played peek-a-boo, and mom and dad even threw him in the air for me.
It was a joy to capture this little dude!

The Heart Of A "Pro" Wedding Photographer | Minneapolis Wedding Photographer

This article came up on my facebook news feed this morning and I wanted to share a bit of it. I thought it was SO insightful and such a good eye opener and educational article. I think it is the cry of our hearts in sense, as a wedding photographer. I just took the middle of the article and pasted it below. To read the entire article go here: click here. Mrs. X (the writer) even shares images from her wedding, that went wrong.

"Here I am a few years later, now a ‘pro’ photographer myself (who knew that would happen!!) and I now have a new found understanding of the skills required to shoot a wedding. I find myself wishing I knew then what I know now. You may have read articles from photographers before staying how important it is that your wedding photographer has experience, knows how to handle lighting and uses the right equipment etc, and while I am here to reiterate these points, I’m not here to say these things to pimp my own services. I figured this article could be a little cathartic for me and I really hope I can help you think a little bit more about your decision – whether that be to spend money on your wedding photography, or to go for the cheaper option of hiring someone with no experience – maybe a friend with a nice camera who has offered to do it for free. Please note that a ‘nice camera’ does not a good wedding photographer make!
We got married in December and I now appreciate that winter weddings, where you come out of the ceremony to the cold and dark, are bloody hard work and really difficult to photograph.  I understand that romantic candle lit receptions might look gorgeous in ‘real life’ but require a certain level of skill to capture on camera, and above all I now know that all of the money I spent making the venue look beautiful and cosy was pretty much wasted.  OK so our guests will always remember how beautiful the venue looked, but for me the day flew by so fast and I don’t remember much of it myself!  Every time I mention my wedding my Mum says ‘But it looked so beautiful’ and whilst I’m sure that’s not just her being kind (it’s really not her style) it has made me hate my own wedding because I don’t look back at my photos and see a beautiful wedding, I look at them and see horribly dark and blurry photos.
You see, not realising the true impact of what I was doing, I asked my friend to shoot my big day.  He had a DSLR and could take amazing pictures of cars so he must be able to shoot my winter wedding right? Wrong!
It wasn’t his fault really, I should have learnt more, understood a bit about light (or lack of it) and made things easier.  But here’s the worst part, I wasn’t on a £1000 budget, I spent quite a lot more.  I prioritised wrongly.  I spent more on bridesmaids dresses than I did on my photographer, more on pretty decorations than pretty images…simply put, I was a fool!
Don’t get me wrong, I know not everyone has the budget to pay much for their wedding photographer and this is not an article to make you feel bad.  I say use whoever you want – a professional, a friend, whoever…it’s your wedding after all. But I urge you to do your research first and go into it knowing that the results of the cheap option just won’t be the same as someone with experience shooting weddings.
If you aren’t using a professional then you need to take some responsibility and help them out a bit, consider it a creative project.  Here’s the things I wish I had done…

• Took them to the ceremony venue at a date and time with similar light (light is so important, I can’t stress that enough) and took sample images to get the right camera settings.
• Showed them the way I intended to light the reception and had fun taking practise images with them to get a feel for the correct look.
• Checked their kit included at least one low light lens (2.8f or lower…it’s the number that’s important) and if not budgeted to hire them one for the day (try www.lensesforhire.co.uk)
Showed more interest in their work and ensured they had practiced shooting in similar lighting situations – shooting static cars in the middle of the day is nothing like shooting a wedding, with loads going on, when its dark!
• Had my wedding earlier in the day…to give them a fighting chance.
• Turned the lights up a bit for important things like the first dance and the speeches.
• Most controversial of all, perhaps I should have held my wedding when the light was better and not in the winter.

Sadly I only realised how important my wedding pictures were after the big day.  I waited for months for images that I am now too embarrassed to show people!
My parting words are these.  If you can afford a professional wedding photographer then please please please spend as much as you can to get the best! These images mark the start of your family album and they can’t be easily redone.  If you use a non ‘pro’, be sure to put some work in yourself, show an interest and consider the previous tips.  Oh and finally, if your shooter is using a DSLR (and they have enough memory…RAW files average 28MB each) ask them to shoot and provide RAW images as well as JPEG (they can set their camera to do this automatically).  RAW files are much easier to correct in Photoshop afterwards if you do have problems with the images, plus you could always pay someone to edit the RAW files in the future when you have the budget for it.
Just remember you’re still not going to get the same results as with photos that were shot by a skilled professional (you can’t polish a turd after all!) but the images may be able to be improved with some clever edits in Photoshop.
My final words of advice are this, please be careful when choosing a friend or family member to shoot your wedding. If they do a bad job it could even ruin your relationship. It kind of did ours, and that makes me even more sad.
If my words don’t convince you then take a look at my wedding photos! If you do recognise me…ssssshhhhh Mum’s the word!
It’s actually hard to put in to words how upsetting it is to look at these but mostly because I know it’s a problem of my own causing!"

Again, I did not write this. I read it and wanted to share! To read the entire article go here: click here

India | Missions & Our Adventure

My husband and I will be taking our second trip to India this coming February. Ben's parents have been missionaries there for the past 30 + years and go back for 2-3 months every year. Ben "grew up" going there since he was little, staying for the majority of the year and coming home when their visa's require it. Last year was my first chance to go, we had been talking about it since we started dating in 2003. I can tell you I can't wait to get onto that 20 hour (or so) plane ride to go back. Please email me to get a full list of the things we will be doing this upcoming year and what we did this past year! I would love to share our adventures with you!

I do have a full gallery of images that we took last year. 100% of the profits from any print purchase go to our trip this upcoming year. We also put together a nice little coffee style book and 100% of the profits will also go to this year or next years trip (depending on when the book is purchased). The thing about both of those is the profits are being donated through my business and they both cost money to produce so only a percentage is going due to the cost to create & send the image and the even greater (50%+) to create the book and ship it.
SO if you are interested in donating money directly to Redemption Ministry please donate below (through paypal) this will be a tax right off for you and go to our upcoming trip (our plane tickets, any money that is donated after that will go to the ministry and helping those we will be working with). If you would like to send a check please email me and I can get you all the info needed for that!

Thank you for your donations, your time and (most important) your prayers!

Emily & Colby | Minneapolis Wedding Photographer

The very last wedding of two thousand and eleven. It has been an amazing year! This wedding was the perfect day to top them all. This couple is amazing. Their goal was to have their wedding be a celebration of their love, for their family and friends to enjoy and party and what a success. The entire day was at the Profile Event Center, which is a very nice venue! From their large bridal party, their wonderful loving families to all the special details they had planned the day went perfectly! The day ended with a kids band Koo Koo Kanga Roo, where the kiddo's and entire bridal party danced, laughed, and had a wonderful time! It was a wonderful way to end a perfect day!

New Years Resolutions | Life

Happy New Years Day! I have been prepping this little post for a bit, all week thinking about what 2012 will hold. I really can't believe that 2011 is over, it seemed to go by so fast! It is so exciting to announce that I will be full time this spring. All photography all the time. Which means more time to have referral programs, to make awesome products and designs for me and other photographers, to be able to submit more work and get more publication! I really truly can't wait. We will be taking off for my second trip to India in the end of January, for 4-5 weeks of meetings/missions and spending time with the kiddo's from the children's homes + taking pictures of everything. SO excited to bring my d700 along!
New year resolutions... I believe Calvin and Hobbes have encompassed my true feelings about this. However I do have goals that I want to complete, to better myself, my home, my relationship with Christ and my career. So I wanted to share them, so: 1. I know where they are at the end of the year to check my progress 2. have people who support and encourage me, YOU!

New Years Resolutions Goals of 2012 :
Personal
0 craft more: camera straps, dolls (felt it up!), handbags (out of sheets and vintage fabrics), knit (new stitches!)
0 writing | pen & paper: I have a story that is in my head that I wanted to write down... it's a progress, & kiddos book : bible stories | illustrations (mixed media) & text (real and biblically written).
0 health: utilize that gym membership we recently purchased with pilates, running and weights.
0 read: I read fantasy like a mad women but I want to read: all Jane Austin, all C.S. Lewis, and all Anne Of Green Gables.
0 faith/God: live, love 100% for Him and His kingdom. Always look to the end goal of Christ's saving salvation and our eternity. I need to dedicate more time in my daily schedule to His word and His presence. This goal isn't an option but a must, my number one!

Photography/Contributing
0 expand my Etsy store: with vintage finds & with my own craftiness.
o newborn/birth photo: concentrate and expand newborn/birth clientele, offer more products (attempt more affordable products)
0 wedding: perfect welcome packet, get down to a 30 day turnaround, perfect album creation, offer unbelievable keepsake items.
0 continue with the bussiness mind set that I want to "bless people with the gift that God has blessed me with". I love what I do, and I fully realize that it is because of the grace of God that I got such a fun job.

In conclusion, the above comic sums up what it all comes down to. I read today on a wonderful photographers blog, Bluelily : "Stuff does not matter.  Family does.  All you need to be happy is one another, and forget the rest." And really it is SO true, if at the end of the year I check off one thing, all things or zero things as long as my family surrounds me and our love and will to live for Christ's purpose surrounds us, nothing else holds value.

God bless you in this new year and as always thank YOU for your support in following the blog and allowing me to capture your lives!
